What are the benefits of Laser Hair Removal?

How does laser hair removal work?

A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted is well absorbed by the pigment located in hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling numerous follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's growth.

Is laser hair removal painful?

The laser treatment itself can cause a slight tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure well. Because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia can be an option. Acadiana Laser Center utilizes the Serenity system which increases comfort by 60%. Therefore, providing you with a very comfortable laser experience.

How long do the treatments take?

The treatment time can vary considerably depending on the size of the area treated, and the particular technique used. A small area such as the upper lip may take only five minutes, while a larger area like the back or legs may take up to one hour. Since the laser affects only those hairs in the growing stage, and not all hairs will be in this stage at the same time, several treatments will most likely be needed to effectively remove all the hair from one area. Subsequent sessions will be scheduled at least a month apart. By this time you will probably begin to notice the re-growth of hairs that were previously in the resting stage.

How many treatments are required?

Although the FDA has approved several types of laser for permanent hair reduction, results can vary. An individual's metabolism, hormonal level, hair quality and number of hair follicles can all affect the outcome. Moreover, normal hair goes through a growth cycle in three stages: the anagen, or growing phase; the telogen, or resting phase; and the catagen, or transitional phase. During the anagen phase, hair is susceptible to the laser's energy, but during the telogen and catagen phases, it is resistant.

At any one time, various percentages of body hair will be in each of these phases, making complete removal unlikely without multiple sessions.

Typically six treatments are necessary to achieve the desired result.

What are the benefits of Laser Vein Removal (Legs & Face)

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, enlarged superficial blood vessels that appear red or blue. They commonly occur on the legs, but frequently occur on the face or elsewhere.

These dilated blood vessels may be short, unconnected lines each about the size of a large hair or connected in a matted, "sunburst" pattern. They may also look like a spider web or a tree with branches. Sometimes, they occur in a small area and aren't very noticeable, or they can cover a large area of skin and be quite unattractive.

If spider veins are unsightly or uncomfortable, they can be treated effectively with our state of the art lasers in as little as one to two sessions for smaller vessels.

Larger dilated blood vessels called varicose veins may be raised above the skin surface, and are best treated by a vascular surgeon.  If need be, Dr. Schneider can refer a competent vascular surgeon for you.

Patients can have pain, ranging from a dull throbbing pain to a burning sensation. The larger vessels are more likely to cause discomfort, although smaller blue veins have been shown to cause pain.

Can spider veins be prevented?

Spider veins can't always be prevented. Wearing support hose may minimize unwanted blood vessels from developing. Keeping one's weight at a normal level and exercising regularly may also be helpful. Eating a high-fiber diet and wearing low-heeled shoes may also help. Sun protection is important to limit the number of unwanted vessels on the face.

What are the benefits of removing pigmented spots and lesions?

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, one or two treatments are sufficient to see dramatic results. Additional treatments may be required for very large or dark spots or for densely covered areas.

Will the spots reappear over time?

No. New spots may appear. These too can be removed. Remember to liberally apply sunscreen when outdoors to minimize sun damage and the appearance of new spots.
